Sunglasses: essential for any trip to the sea
At the water's edge as well as in the open sea, eye protection is essential. Indeed, in addition to the rays coming directly from the sun, you will also be exposed to the rays reflected on the surface of the water. To protect yourself effectively against this phenomenon, you must choose your sunglasses correctly, to avoid damaging your eyes.
How to choose your sunglasses?
The first criterion to take into account when choosing your pair of sunglasses is the protection provided by the lenses. Classified in 5 categories numbered from 0 to 4, the glasses offer a different protection against the rays. Category 0 lenses are the least protective: they offer a degree of protection from 0 to 20%. The higher the category, the more effective the protection. A pair of category 4 sunglasses offer up to 90% protection. Keep in mind, however, that category 4 sunglasses are not authorized for driving because the lenses slightly distort vision and can alter certain colors. For navigation, we generally use category 3 sunglasses, category 4 being more for mountaineers.
Once you know the protection criteria, you can make your choice according to other criteria, such as buoyancy. Indeed, some models of sailing sunglasses float, to prevent them from sinking when they fall into the water. Opting for a pair of floating sunglasses can be very practical, especially when sailing a dinghy.
