Glaciere Pour Bateau

Why buy a boat cooler?

Boat coolers have become a must-have item for people who organize day trips on boats.

Coolers allow you to keep your food and drinks fresh all day long and even longer! These products are designed to withstand humidity and harsh weather conditions.

We have selected for you quality coolers from the Igloo brand. These portable coolers are easily transportable thanks to their ultra-resistant and non-slip handles. Igloo coolers have totally different volumes, so you can find the one that suits you in terms of liters. They also have many accessories that facilitate the use of people (cup holders, nets ...).

The maintenance of a cooler is very important, if you want your equipment to last over time, regular cleaning will extend its life.

How to choose a boat cooler?

To choose the right boat cooler, you must first define the circumstances in which you will need it on board a boat. Coolers have various storage capacities, from a few liters to large volumes. The price will be different depending on the volume.

What volume of storage?

  • The 10 liter coolers are often used for individual use.
  • The 20 liter models are used to transport food for up to 4 people.
  • Coolers between 30 and 40 liters are designed to store food for up to 6 people.
  • Coolers with a volume of more than 30 or 40 liters are mainly used for specific purposes, often more important than a simple family outing.

Which range of boat coolers should I choose?

There are two main types of boat coolers: passive coolers and active coolers. They both have a specific use.

The passive cooler

The passive cooler does not produce cold or heat, it is isothermal. In general, these coolers are made of polyethylene or sometimes aluminum, thanks to this, the coolers have a good insulation. It allows the conservation of food in the cool thanks to the addition of refrigerating elements (ice blocks, ice...). This type of cooler is frequently used for short term use, because it is easily portable and at more affordable prices.

Passive coolers, on the other hand, cannot keep products cool for very long. The following list of examples are quality passive coolers: igloo IMX coolers, igloo BMX, marine ultra igloo, marine contour Igloo, marine ultra 30 igloo and igloo marine TrailMate coolers. Passive coolers can be useful on a fishing trip to store your catch, bait or tackle.

The active cooler

Compared to the passive cooler, the active cooler is electrically powered, which allows the elements inside to cool down. The operation is similar to that of a refrigerator. This type of cooler allows people to keep products in stock, cold, for a longer time. They can be plugged into 12V outlets, allowing them to be run continuously in cars, trucks and boats.

This is an advantage over the passive cooler, but on the other hand the active cooler is difficult to transport, more cumbersome and noisy with the presence of a motor. An electric cooler must be properly maintained if it is to last.

Dometic's electric coolers are excellent products that are well known in their field. We can find the range Dometic TropiCool TCX, CoolFreeze CFX3 and the coolers Dometic CoolFreeze CFF. The insulation quality of CoolFreeze coolers is reinforced to keep the cold at a maximum. Maintenance is also easy thanks to their drain plug.

These products can be installed on board boats with the help of fasteners, to the delight of users thanks to their numerous accessories and storage spaces.

The different categories of active coolers

The electric coolers are declined in 3 sub-ranges of coolers that can be adapted on board a boat: the thermoelectric cooler, the absorption cooler and the compression cooler.

Thermoelectric coolers

The first and least expensive electric cooler on the market is the thermoelectric cooler. It allows heating and cooling thanks to thePelletier effect. The thermoelectric cooler contains a simple cooling mode. It is equipped with a cooling system based on two conductors that produce heat and cold when an alternating or direct current passes through it.

These coolers are used in places where the ambient temperature is not excessive, as they are made to decrease the temperature by about 20°C.

The advantages of this cooler are:

  • The cooler allows you to cool and heat (your drinks, your dishes...)
  • The materials are solid, they do not fear the shocks during the voyages
  • They can be connected to different voltage sockets (12 V, 24 V, 220 V)
  • They are small, light and easily portable
  • The price is relatively low

The disadvantages of this thermoelectric cooler are :

  • Not suitable for use in hot countries
  • It cools down slowly
  • Slightly noisy due to the cooler's ventilation system
  • Low storage capacity

Electric absorption coolers

The second electric boat cooler that exists is the absorption cooler. It runs on gas and can be used without the need for an electrical connection. It is not equipped with a motor, but with a piping system that transforms a mixture of ammonia, hydrogen and water into cold.

This cooler allows to lower the temperature significantly, it is recommended for use in a temperate environment.

The advantages of the electric absorption cooler are :

  • It is powered by gas and can be used on the go
  • The cooler can also be powered by electric plugs (12V, 24V, 220V)
  • It is silent as it has no motor
  • The cooler has an extremely powerful cooling system
  • The cooler rarely breaks down
  • The cooler has a high storage capacity

The disadvantages of this type of cooler are :

  • It must be placed perfectly horizontally or it may not work properly
  • The cooler is not recommended for temperatures over 30°C
  • It has a rather high price

Electric coolers with compressor

The electric cooler that exists is the compressor cooler. It works in much the same way as a refrigerator. The cooling gas circulates through the piping which creates the cold.

This cooler is designed to lower the temperature by more than twenty degrees in warm and temperate environments. The compressor cooler is ultra recommended for use in transporting frozen goods and for professional use in extreme weather conditions.

The advantages of the electric compressor cooler are :

  • It can produce cold quickly
  • The compressor cooler can potentially freeze products if needed
  • It can hold a lot of stock
  • The electric cooler has a high efficiency because its operation does not depend on external conditions
  • It has a high storage capacity
  • The cooler cools to the desired temperature (between 10°C and -18°C)
  • It can be powered from any socket (12V, 24V, 220V)
  • The electric compressor cooler can be used in horizontal and vertical position

The disadvantages of the compressor cooler are :

  • The cooler is noisy
  • It is quite heavy and therefore not easily portable
  • The electric compressor cooler has a high price
