Carte marine Shom

The Shom, a decisive player in the hydrographic world

SHOM (Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy) is a public administrative establishment under the supervision of the Ministry of the Armed Forces. Heir to the repository of maps and plans of the navy, created in 1720, its head office is located today on the Atlantic coast, in Brest. The shom is in charge of describing and forecasting the oceans, from the coast to the open sea. The Shom thus actively contributes to the development of the maritime world in France. It provides numerous instructions, information and data on the subject of tides and navigation charts for example.

Shom charts, the marine chart reference

Shom publishes nautical charts for civil, military, fishing, commercial and even recreational sailors. Each shom nautical chart has a lot of information on the maritime space allowing you to best trace your navigation route. Shom nautical charts are published in paper format as well as in digital format. A paper nautical chart is one of the essential navigation elements. This format allows you to have your map easily at hand and to obtain information on the islands crossed, the port you wish to enter, etc. allowing you to improve the security of your browsing. In digital format, your map will be in the form of a database or GPS image. Each nautical chart has nautical information relating to the tide, ports, new dangers, etc.

Nautical information is collected, reported and disseminated thanks to the participation of numerous authorities, services and administrations. The charts published by the marine hydrographic oceanographic service are a database and nautical information which can be recovery as does Navicarte which uses these resources to publish simpler and more accessible charts.
