Marine varnish

Marine varnish, the ultimate protection for your boat

Marine varnish is a protection for the wood of your boat, but also for other surfaces such as steel, polyester or epoxy. It is part of the boat paint category and its role is to sublimate your hull while protecting it for many years. You can find products with a colorless or satin finish, depending on your preferences. The climates encountered can be extreme, with strong sunlight or strong exposure to water, a poorly protected wood will quickly become unusable, jeopardizing the structure of your ship.

The different types of marine varnish

Just like paint, we can find marine varnishes in several categories. The gloss varnish is the most common. It allows your woodwork to shine with the slightest ray of sunlight. The glossy marine varnish Compass International Polyurethane Varnish is of very good quality for a very low price. It will offer a brilliant treatment to your wood with an amber color to sublimate it. On the contrary, we can find a matte varnish which will avoid reflections and will give a more sober aspect to the wood. Most varnishes are colorless marine varnishes and will simply add a protective film, or even an anti-UV treatment, with a finish offering high resistance to the elements. This is the case of Woodskin International Colorless Varnish which is a hybrid mix between varnish and oil to saturate the wood and apply a protective film. For indoor use, we recommend the Goldspar Satin International Varnish which is intended for this use and offers a satin finish of the most beautiful effect.

Apply and maintain your wood varnish

The application of the marine varnish is quite simple but requires some precautions before use. You must first prepare your woodwork well in order to remove all traces of the old paint and any imperfections. Do not use any solvent for this, a simple abrasive paper will suffice and will not damage your wood. You can find under the brands Yachtcare and 3M everything you need to repair the imperfections. You will then need to let the wood dry completely and remove as much dust as possible. Now apply the primer that will give a better color to the wood and increase the adhesion of the varnish on the surface. Then comes the application of the varnish. You will have to apply 3 to 5 uniform coats respecting the drying time recommended by the manufacturer. You can choose the application of 0.75 L Perfection Plus International Varnish which is a very high quality two-component clear gloss varnish. For large surfaces, opt for its version Perfection Plus International 2.5 L Varnish which has the same characteristics in a larger pot.
