Choose your thermal underwear

Sous vetement thermique homme

Thermal underwear and the 3-layer rule

To effectively protect yourself against the elements at sea, it is customary to apply what is known as the 3 layer rule. Each layer of protection has a specific role to fulfill. The first layer (thermal underwear) must keep you warm and be breathable to keep your skin dry during exercise. The second layer, the fleece jacket, must absolutely retain your body heat. Finally, the third layer (the shift jacket) should not keep you warm but protect you from rain and wind.

Choosing the right thermal underwear

But be careful, each layer is complementary and you must choose your 3 layers carefully to fully benefit from the complementarity of this system. Regarding thermal underwear (the first layer), three criteria must absolutely be taken into account: breathability, warmth and freedom of movement. An underlayer should keep you warm and let moisture escape. If a thermal underwear does not meet these first two criteria, it will be better to opt for another model. Then, it is important that the underlay is comfortable and gives you the best possible freedom of movement, so as not to affect the maneuvers you are going to perform. Nylon, polyester, spandex or even elastane will offer you great freedom of movement, but if you are looking for more thermal comfort, merino wool is the material you should go for.
