Lifelines for safe boating
In addition to being compulsory, the lifeline is an essential safety feature on board your boat. It protects people on deck, from the aft to the forward pulpit, preventing any crew member from accidentally falling into the water. It also provides a secure hold when moving around the deck in rough seas.
The spinneret is a system of flexible textile wires, or stainless steel and steel cables, supported by rigid structures called stanchions. Mainly found on sailboats, it is also widely used on pleasure craft, but also on some motorboats. This barrier consists of a stainless steel cable covered with a PVC sheath, a crimped end cap, a balcony connector and a turnbuckle at the opposite end.
No wire without stanchions and baseplate
Stainless steel or steel stanchions and a base plate for each stanchion are essential for installing your die on board. To install a boat die, you'll need to add stanchions and bases to your shopping list. A boat die kit includes all the above elements.
The stanchion is the vertical bar that supports the die, and is fixed to the deck by means of a steel or stainless steel base. You don't need any special tools or instruments to install your wire rope, apart from crimping pliers.
For an even easier way of arranging your boat wiring, there's nothing more effective than a Parafil cable. Parafil cables with ferrules, distributed in particular by Osculati, are used by the French Navy for their fast assembly.
Boat wiring, standards to be respected
Once they've been installed, stanchions and boat lines act as real guard rails when sailing offshore or along the coast. For even greater safety, you can add a boat net, such as the priced at 48€ for 10 meters. Last but not least, we've thought of occupant comfort with the appearance of a foam or rigid spinneret backrest, also available from Plastimo at a price of €20 for the foam model or €29 for the , again from French fastener manufacturer Plastimo.
Depending on the category of your sailboat, there are certain standards to be respected for the installation of stanchions. These standards define stanchion height, die tension levels and orifice diameter.
The diameter of the dies must be sufficient to prevent breakage or damage. The height of the stanchions and dies is designed to avoid obstructing the skipper's view. Finally, no special maintenance is recommended, apart from a visual check of your dies before departure and a fresh-water rinse for greater durability.
