Boat lifeline, traveling safely
Beyond the fact that it is mandatory, the lifeline is an essential safety element on board your boat. It guarantees the protection of people on deck, from the rear balcony to the front balcony, thus preventing any accidental fall of a crew member into the water. The lifeline also allows you to hold on when moving on deck in rough seas.
The lifeline is a system of flexible textile wires, or stainless steel and steel cable, supported by rigid structures called stanchions. It is mainly found on sailboats, very common on pleasure boats in particular, but also on certain motor boats. This barrier consists of a stainless steel cable covered with a PVC sheath, a crimping end, a balcony connector and a turnbuckle at the opposite end.
No line without stanchions or base
To install your lifeline on board, it is essential to have stainless steel or steel stanchions, and a base for each stanchion. Installing the boat lifeline involves adding stanchions and bases to your purchasing list. A boat lifeline kit includes all the elements mentioned.
If it corresponds to the vertical bar which will serve as a support for your lifeline, the stanchion is fixed to the deck using a steel or stainless steel base. There is no need to equip yourself with any special tools or instruments for installing your lifeline cable, other than crimping pliers.
For even easier arrangement of your boat lifelines, nothing is more effective than a Parafil cable. Parafil cables with end caps, distributed in particular by the supplier Osculati, are used by the French Navy for their rapid assembly. Once installed, stanchions and lifelines act as real guardrails for navigation offshore or along the coast. For more security, you can add a die net, like the at the price of €48 for 10 meters. Finally, everything has been thought of for the comfort of the occupants with the appearance of the foam or rigid die backrest, also available from Plastimo at the price of €20 for the foam model or €29 for the , still with the French fittings manufacturer Plastimo.
There are standards to respect for the installation of lifelines depending on the category of your sailboat. These standards define the height of the stanchions, the degrees of tension of the die and the diameter of the orifices.
The dies have a sufficient diameter to avoid any breakage or damage. The height of the stanchions and lifelines are designed not to obstruct the skipper's view. Finally, no special maintenance is recommended, other than a visual inspection of your lines before departure and rinsing with fresh water for greater durability.
