Boat Bilge Pump

Bilge pump, the most efficient solution for drying out your boat bilge

A bilge pump is the most efficient way to evacuate the water accumulated in your boat's bilge. It is a mandatory safety accessory on board, in accordance with article 240-2.15. From the manual bilge pump to the electric submersible bilge pump, each bilge pump offers different advantages to best suit your use, and above all to eliminate water seeping into your boat. Several brands offer quality bilge pumps, including Attwood (the benchmark), Whale supersub and Plastimo. An Attwood bilge pump is a guarantee of quality for your boat, and we present our Attwood bilge pumps below. You'll find a wide choice of attwood or plastimo bilge pumps in our category dedicated to products for removing water from your boat. The other most popular brand is Rule. Rule is a specialist in bilge and bilge pumps. The Rule store offers the best bilge pumps and dewatering accessories. Rule offers Rule automatic bilge pumps, Rule manual submersible bilge pumps, Rule automatic bilge pumps and Rule heavy-duty bilge pumps.

Without going into technical details, a bilge pump has a pumping system, diaphragm or centrifugal motor, and two hose connections. One hose is immersed in the bilge and draws in water, while the second evacuates water away from the boat. Output is variable, depending on motor power and the model of manual bilge pump chosen. Electric bilge pumps are watertight and can be immersed in water without difficulty. If you're dealing with bilge pumps produced by English-speaking companies, don't be surprised by the GPH unit of measurement. In the USA, Canada and the UK, the flow of water pumped by a bilge pump is calculated in GPH, which stands for Gallons Pumped per Hour. One gallon represents 4.54 Litres in the UK and Canada, and 3.78 Litres in the USA. The GPH volume unit is not widely used, but it's good to know what GPH means.

Manual bilge pump

Unlike an automatic bilge pump, a manual bilge pump will need your physical action to operate and draw in and discharge the water. Manual bilge pumps can be portable or not, and discharge between 25 and 100L/minute of water.

We offer the Plastimo diaphragm bilge pump, a manual bilge pump with 8 water suction hose positions. This diaphragm bilge pump is made of resistant plastic and stainless steel for greater strength and water discharge reliability. The diaphragm of this bilge pump is removable. The Plastimo manual diaphragm bilge pump is a similar model, but with a choice of single-acting or double-acting. This bilge pump also offers a much higher flow rate. This product is in stock at Nautisports. Free delivery on orders over 150 euros.

For a flush-mount model with telescopic handle, Plastimo's Pump 925 and 1038 manual bil ge pumps are two models with By-Pass capability for coupling bilge pumps on the same circuit. Their flow rates of 0.9 L of water/cycle and 1L of water/cycle are quite high for a manual bilge pump. This product is in stock at Nautisports. Free delivery on orders over 150 euros.

These bilge pumps are recommended for stagnant water or black water in the bilge. Beyond that, they become too limited in terms of flow and can't evacuate water fast enough. To evacuate more water, you'll need to switch to an electric bilge pump. Ideally, you should have a bilge pump for every electrical problem, so you can successfully evacuate water in any situation.

Electric and automatic bilge pumps

An electric bilge pump uses a motor to pump water out of the bilge and back onto the boat. This type of pump is fixed and is a watertight submersible bilge pump. Thanks to their small size, they can be easily positioned at the bottom of the hold, even in the most difficult nooks and crannies, and operate regardless of the amount of water in the hold. These bilge pumps don't require much electrical power. The volume of water evacuated by this type of bilge pump is between 25 and 160 L of water/minute.

There are two types of electric bilge pump:

  • The basic electric bilge pump. Electric bilge pumps feature an ON/OFF switch to activate the pump. This submersible electric bilge pump is highly efficient for evacuating water, but requires human action to trigger and operate the motor. This type of pump can be converted into an automatic bilge pump using the Attwood automatic bilge pump trigger. This waterproof electronic switch eliminates the need for a switch and automatically triggers your bilge pump when submerged in water. The Attwood tsunami bilge pump is an excellent electric submersible bilge pump at a price of just €25. This product is in stock at Nautisports. Free delivery on orders over €150.
  • The automatic electric bilge pump. This type of bilge pump is triggered automatically when the bilge water reaches a certain level. A float is carried by the rising water until it switches on when the water is high enough, triggering the motor. The Sahara Attwood automatic bilge pump is an excellent product of its kind. For a price of just 73€, you can acquire a compact and powerful automatic bilge pump. Its electronic contactor makes it an automatic bilge pump. This product is in stock on Nautisports. Free delivery from 150 euros of purchase.

These electric submersible bilge pumps, with or without float switch, offer excellent water discharge through the hose at affordable prices.
