Lampe Flash Bateau

Flashlight, one of the best signaling devices for your safety

A lifejacket flashlight is an essential piece of safety equipment. There are many different types of lamp that sailors can use. They range from the simple flashlight to the powerful multi-purpose lantern. A flashlight is usually ultra-compact and lightweight, and is designed to be attached under the lung of an automatic lifejacket. It's a vital signaling accessory to ensure your safety in the event of danger. When a lifejacket flashlight is triggered, its LED light beam reverberates throughout the lifejacket lung, making the man overboard much more visible. It's the individual signaling device of choice to counter the danger of losing a Man Over Board (MOB).

Boat flashlight: what's the difference with a torch?

Boat lights fall into two main categories: flashlights and torches. Flashlights are true signaling devices. They are small enough to slip into a pocket or small bag, but it is advisable to attach them to your lifejacket. Flashlights are safety devices to be used in emergencies only. They should not be used for conventional illumination in the dark. A lifejacket flashlight is for use in the event of distress. Boat flashlights, on the other hand, are larger, and are designed for everyday use on the boat. They are designed to be held in the hand. Other lamps are used when you need more powerful lighting than that provided by a flashlight, but are not considered safety equipment per se.

The different types of waterproof flashlight for lifejackets

There are several types of flashlight available on the market today. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The classic flashlight, with its electronic mechanism, is a compact flashlight to be attached to the lifejacket. This is the case with the Compact W3 flash light (with attachment clip) . This lifejacket flashlight is SOLAS-certified. The other type of flashlight you'll find is the famous Cyalume green light stick . This stick fluoresces when cracked, enabling detection at very long distances. It's a good idea to shake it vigorously if you fall overboard. All glow-sticks are fitted with a string for a secure grip. This signaling device has a 12-hour light duration.

Flash lights for lifejackets, SOLAS-certified signaling devices

The lifejacket flashlight is an extremely effective signaling accessory, and is a SOLAS-certifiable safety device. The best brands producing flash lights are Plastimo, Osculati and Crewsaver. The best Plastimo flashlight is the Compact W3 flashlight with holder (vest, kitesurf, windsurf) , which is suitable for both sailors and water sportspeople. This individual light features an ultra-bright LED. It switches on automatically on contact with water, and switches off manually. This accessory's fastening system is top of the range. The Lampe Flash automatique pour gilet Osculati is almost as effective, at a lower price (15€). It features 4 different LED lightings, and also triggers on contact with water. The FlashLight SOLAS CrewSaver is the lifejacket flashlight certified by most marine safety and technical standards organizations. It is approved by IMO SOLAS, MED, MCA and RORC, and clips onto all CrewSaver lifejackets.
