Navigation lights: the essential accessory
Navigation lights provide lighting for the boat when sailing or anchoring in in the dark or in reduced visibility. These lights are an important safety element for your boat while sailing. What are the different lights on a boat?
- Side lights :These are two lights, one green placed on the starboard side, and the other red placed on the port side. Both project uninterrupted light over an arc of 112.5° from the front to 22.5° at the rear.
- The stern light:It is a white light placed closest to the stern which projects uninterrupted light over an arc of 135°. It must never be placed higher than the side lights, but at the same height.
- Masthead light:It is a white light placed above the longitudinal axis of the ship which projects uninterrupted light over an arc of 225°. It must be located at least 1 m higher than the side lights.
- Signaling light (or all-round light):It is a light which projects uninterrupted light over a 360° arc. It can be white, red or green.
For sailboats less than 20 m, the three lights (side lights and stern light) can be combined into one to be placed at the masthead in order to use only one bulb.
