The fishing lifejacket, essential for going to sea

To go fishing on a boat, whether professional or not, you must equip yourself with an adapted fishing life jacket. Fishing life jackets

There are two main categories of fishing life jackets:

• The foam lifejacket. It is the simplest, keeps a constant volume and buoyancy. It is however more restrictive in terms of freedom of movement required for fishing.
• The inflatable lifejacket. This vest offers excellent freedom of movement when deflated, and quite good when inflated. There are several inflation systems:
• Manual. It is up to the user to activate a pull cord to start the inflation. The manual inflation system does not provide the greatest security, because it requires the user to be able to operate the pull cord.
• Automatic. When the lifejacket comes into contact with water, the inflation of the lifejacket is triggered automatically. There is the Hammar hydrostatic system, which is triggered by water pressure (immersion at 10 cm) and the Pro Sensor system, which is triggered when the safety pad dissolves on contact with water.

The essential characteristics for a fishing lifejacket are its category, mentioned above, but also its buoyancy. The buoyancy of a lifejacket is measured in Newtons. For the Plastimo Pilot Seashore Long Coast Vest for example, the useful buoyancy, its category, is 100 N, i. e. 100 Newtons, for a real buoyancy of 165 N, i. e. 165 Newtons. Below 100 N, they are more like buoyancy aid vests.
