Baby lifejackets: which model to choose?

Toddlers are the ones whose safety on board is paramount. To choose the right model for your offspring, you'll need to match the lifejacket to their weight. Whether they can swim or not, children are the first people to be equipped when sailing on any type of water surface.

Baby lifejackets: safety for children, peace of mind for parents

Because they are the most exposed to danger at sea,  children (just like adults) require a lifejacket adapted to their weight. While some children are innate to water activities, others find them more of an ordeal. That's why life jackets are compulsory for young children accompanying you.

IMPORTANT: From a regulatory point of view, only the child's weight is taken into account when calculating buoyancy and choosing the right size. A child weighing less than 30 kg must be fitted with a lifejacket of at least 100N. French regulations require this.

Infants & babies: inflatable or foam vests ?

For infants, you may be inclined to think that inflatable lifejackets, which are generally more buoyant, are the right choice for your little ones. However, when sailing at sea or on a lake, foam lifejackets are the best choice. Often referred to as a "safety armband", foam lifejackets are your toddler's best friend, ensuring constant safety.

Foam lifejackets are perfectly suited to our youngest sailors, whatever the conditions at sea. Approved to category 100N, depending on the model, they guarantee that your child will turn over onto his back, keeping his head above water to keep his airways clear.

Foam vests for children, the advantages

Foam vests are most often marketed in orange. This makes it easier to spot the victim from the air, from a helicopter for example, or from a boat to speed up the rescue process. They are also usually fitted with a towing handle, for easier location, and a subcutaneous strap, which prevents the lifejacket from riding up too high on the neck once in the water.

The lifejacket with permanent buoyancy is very useful and reassuring for children. Thanks to its polyethylene foam, which provides buoyancy and impact protection, your child will feel safe and secure during water activities.

What sizes are available for baby ?

Baby safety equipment falls into the category of children's lifejackets . You'll find the right lifejacket for your baby in a range of models for children of different weights. Children's lifejackets are divided by weight, not by age or height. The child's age is given as an indication only. It's essential to have your child try on the lifejacket before going out to sea.

There are different children's sizes on the market, depending on the brand of vest sold. Depending on the model, the size varies according to weight. However, a 100N foam lifejacket is compulsory for children weighing less than 30 kilos.

Getting a child's lifejacket

As with adult lifejackets, a child's lifejacket, or buoyancy aid, needs to be checked regularly to ensure that it is working properly. Regular maintenance involves rinsing the vest in fresh water after use. Regular checking of all parts of your child's foam vest (straps, cover, seams, buckles and zipper) is essential to prevent any malfunction at sea. Testing the buoyancy of your child's lifejacket is also recommended.
