Life jackets
The lifejacket, essential for your safety
The flotation vest respects the 50 Newtons buoyancy standard. Thanks to the neoprene life jacket, you will be ready to practice your nautical activities in complete safety. For dinghy sailing or an offshore trip, the lifejacket will always be part of the equipment you must have on your boat. Lifejackets are required by regulation for all types of water activities. From inshore to offshore, only the capacities of the lifejackets change, but the lifejacket itself remains mandatory.
And to be fully effective, whether it is foam, automatic or manual, your lifejacket must be worn at all times. It ensures, depending on the model, the reversal of a person even unconscious. This is the very definition of a lifejacket, known by all practitioners.
Lifejackets or buoyancy aids?
IMPORTANT: Life jackets and buoyancy aids are used in the context of a professional or leisure activity and must imperatively meet the standards of the European Directive on Personal Protective Equipment (E. P. I - 89/686/CE).
The " CE " marking affixed on each label is mandatory and certifies that the vest is in conformity with the European directive. Buoyancy vests and buoyancy aids are classified by category, according to their use, performance and buoyancy. These categories each correspond to a type of buoyancy, expressed in Newtons, according to the navigation program.
The life jacket, for real safety at sea
Called life jacket, or deckvest in some cases, the life jacket is worn like a sleeveless jacket. It is generally equipped with a zipper system on the front to be put on more easily, and its buoyancy is studied to keep the head above water thanks to a large collar enveloping the neck.
Today's flotation vest is made more comfortable with adjustable elastic straps and waistband, as well as a subcutaneous strap that prevents the vest from riding up under the wearer's neck once in the water.
The 50 Newton lifejacket, or buoyancy vest, is the most popular model among sailing clubs and schools. Ideal for water sports such as kayaking and light sailing, it is also very inexpensive with prices under 30 euros.
The different types of life jackets
Whether you practice river fishing, sea kayaking, water skiing or ocean racing, there is bound to be a safety equipment adapted to your passion. To navigate in complete serenity, you will have to choose a buoyancy vest, with or without harness, according to the nautical activity you practice, but also according to the equipment you wear. Choosing the right product means ensuring your individual buoyancy and maximizing your chances of survival in the sea or river.
The first criterion is the distance to the nearest shelter, i. e. a place where there is a possibility of anchoring, mooring or landing. This distance, determined in nautical miles, is used to define the category for purchasing a suitable lifejacket.
The regulations indicate that from 0 to 2 miles from a shelter, you need a 50 newton lifejacket minimum. From 2 to 6 miles from the first shelter, a vest of at least 100 newtons is required. And for any navigation beyond 6 miles from the nearest shelter, a life jacket of 150 newtons minimum is mandatory for men and women. For children under 30 kg, a life jacket of at least 100 newtons is mandatory regardless of the distance to a shelter.
Which brand to choose?
Many brands and related products are available on the market. For you, we have selected the best ones. And apart from what the regulations recommend, there are several models and brands of life jackets on our site. Jobe, Spinlock, Plastimo or Lalizas, each manufacturer has its own models and colors available for delivery.
If you are an offshore sailor, it is preferable to invest in a Spinlock lifejacket with a UML Pro Sensor Elite release system to ensure your comfort. On the other hand, a Jobe foam vest with neoprene straps will be preferable for water skiing, kayaking, stand up paddling or any other leisure activity. Jobe remains the undisputed manufacturer of vests dedicated to leisure and water sports.
The main advantage of inflatable vests is their small size. Compared to a foam vest, an inflatable vest is more comfortable to wear. It comes in different forms and modes of activation, manual or automatic. An automatic lifejacket requires an overhaul, including spare parts, every 2/3 years and is also equipped with a manual release.
Spinlock remains the best known brand for its efficient and durable products. Their design is thought to bring you the greatest possible comfort while sailing. Different models adapt to the morphology of the wearer, adult or child.
